VOLUNTEERING - MARGARET'S STORY
Margaret, aged 65, joined VTF in Sept 1999 and volunteers by taking clients on outings and shopping.
"I was initially attracted to volunteer work when I retired. The children had left home and I thought I would like to help other people. In my volunteer role I currently take clients on outings, yet I find I am the one benefiting.

I get a lot of satisfaction. People are so grateful for what you do and I have developed lovely friendships with the clients. As you get older I feel your life hasn't got the same meaning but the volunteer work I do gives me meaning to my life.

I recently received 2 awards for my work with VTF. Getting awards is nice but it is what they actually mean that is important. The awards tell me that I am doing my job right, that l am being caring towards people and am actually helping them.
I love working with elderly people and talking to them about life and their experiences. I have recommended volunteering to a friend who is soon retiring. It is so rewarding."
